Newbery Challenge: The Westing Game

12 Jan

I LOVE NEWBERY SATURDAYS. I love waking up and watching Mr. Schu share his wealth of book knowledge in his video. I love checking reading what people have to say about our Nerdy videos, and I love that I no longer have to talk about those boring Newbery books of the 20s, 30s, 40s, and 50s.

I had a hard time keeping everything straight in Westing Game, too, but my 4th graders LOVED it recently during our mystery unit. My students and I just recently Skyped Kate Messner over Capture the Flag – she was awesome! Can’t wait to read Hattie Ever After by Kirby Larson. Got the NetGalley of it. Yay! Thanks for the trip around the country!

I love The Westing Game. It is one of my top 10 favorite Newberys (that I’ve read-I haven’t been able to get to as many as you.) I read it to my 5th graders every year and they all loved it. I turned it into a game and they all participated in the mystery. Of course no one ever got it, but there was always a rush on my class library and the school library for all the copies once I was finished so they could read it again on their own.

(I had that exact same rug in my classroom.)
