One of my favorite things about starting a new school year is seeing my young readers get excited when they see that I have cool books they have never seen. They go crazy over the graphic novels, and they are amazed that we have rocking picture books in our fourth grade classroom, but nothing is like watching a student discover that our library also contains some of their old friends.
We started school last Tuesday, and within 15 minutes I noticed a young reader leafing through the Ivy + Bean books. I could have rushed over and started up a conversation about Ivy + Bean. I could have asked her which character she is most like, or if she had heard about the new book in the series, but I didn’t. She was excited to see an old friend, and I felt that I should let her get reaquainted.
After giving kids time to look explore the classroom library and do a little bit of reading, I checked back in with my little friend. She was reading Ivy + Bean.
There is nothing like an old friend.
