I’m always on the look out for great early-reader books that I can provide my developing 4th grade readers that are not quite ready to make the leap to chapter books. Finding them enough books to satisfy their reading needs is a challenge that I face day-after-day, year-after-year. Many of the books written for students at this stage of reading development fall short when it comes to the interest of my 9 and 10-year-old readers.

Thank goodness for books like Twinky The Dinky Dog. This early-reader written by Kate Klimo will be a book that many of my readers will want to read over and over again.

Twinky is a big dog trapped in the body of a small dog. He is pretty darn frustrated with how his owner treats him like a  dinky dog: she carries him in a bag, dresses him in a sweater, and she makes him go wee-wee on a pad.

I’m confident that readers of all ages and abilities will admire Dinky’s heart as they read to find out how the big dog inside of Binky finds his place in the world.
