5,4,3,2,1 Interview: David Adler

I’m very excited to have David Adler on sharpread today for a 5,4,3,2,1 interview. I really enjoyed his latest book Danny’s Doodles: The Jellybean Experiment.

Here are the rules of a 5,4,3,2,1 interview:

1. I give the interviewee 5 questions

2. They have to answer

  • 1 question with 5 sentences

  • 1 question with 4 sentences

  • 1 question with 3 sentences

  • 1 question with 2 sentences

  • 1 question with 1 sentence

3.  They get to pick which question which question to answer with each number of sentences

4. Have fun!

1. Can you tell us a little bit about DANNY’S DOODLES: THE JELLY BEAN EXPERIMENT?  Danny’s Doodles is about the friendship. The main friendship in this book is between two very different fourth graders.  I think the story is fun with deep meaning running through it.

2. What is your favorite thing about being a writer?  I love the entire process.

3. What’s the hardest thing about being a writer? For me, the hardest parts are starting a new book. It is difficult to let go of a completed manuscript.

4. If you could spend one day inside the world of any book which book would you pick?  I would go inside the world of Danny’s Doodles. I’d be with Danny and his friends. I would like to spend some time at lunch with them. The setting of the school cafeteria would be fun.

5. What advice do you have for the young writers in my classroom?  They should keep on reading. More importantly, they should learn to read like writers.  If they like a story, they should ask themselves why they liked it.  If they don’t, they should ask themselves why they didn’t like the story. They should also try and think about ways to improve a story.

    Great interview, guys! 🙂 David, you having answered Question 3 as you did: do you have trouble feeling like the finished manuscript is truly “done,” or is it that you don’t want to let go of the story itself, emotionally?

    And that’s great advice to young writers!
