5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Interview: Jess Keating

Yesterday, my pal Mr. Schu announced the selections for the March edition of the #SharpSchu Twitter book club. I am super excited that one of the books is Pink Is For Blobfish by Jess Keating. It is such a fun, beautiful, and well-written book.

My third graders LOVED Pink Is For Blobfish. I’m looking forward to sharing this 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 Jess Keating interview with them.

5,4,3,2,1 Interview

1. Can you tell us a little bit about Pink is for Blobfish? (4 sentences)

Pink is for Blobfish is a book about the absolute coolest pink creatures on the planet. Even though we know better, the idea that “pink is for girls” still persists sometimes, and I thought that showing the various sides of pink could help shatter that stereotype once and for all. Pink can be so many things, and I can’t wait for readers to meet the world’s perfectly pink creatures! And bonus, it’s full of David DeGrand’s awesome cartoons!

2. What is your favorite thing about writing nonfiction?  (3 sentences)

I love the look on a reader’s face when they learn about something they’ve never encountered before. Whether it’s a bloaty blobfish or a bright pink tarantula, I feel lucky to help them explore the world through books. I also love that I get to learn more with every book I write!

3. What’s the hardest thing about writing nonfiction? (2 sentences)

The hardest part about writing nonfiction is having to cut material you really love, because you’re running out of space in the book! Luckily, there are always more books to fill up!

4. If you could spend one day as one of the creatures from PINK IS FOR BLOBFISH, which creature would you pick? (1 sentence)

I think it would be great to spend the day as a pink dolphin, swimming with my friends in the Amazon!

5. What advice do you have for the young nonfiction writers in my classroom? (5 sentences)

Nonfiction writing is fantastic because everybody is interested in something. Let yourself go crazy finding out as much as you can about whatever excites you! The best part is, you get to decide how to showcase everything you’ve learned. You can write a long story, a book with pictures, or even a comic book! If you think of nonfiction writing as a way to express yourself and everything you love about the world, you’ll never get tired of it!
