When Michelle Norris tweeted that The Backseat Book Club is putting a list together of the top 100 books for kids 9-14, I got very excited. When the post asked me to leave a comment with my top 5 books, I got very stressed. It would be much easier to come up with a list of 100, than a list of 5, but I’m going to try.
I’ve given myself a few ground rules:
- I have 10 minutes to decide
-
I can’t look to the internet for help
-
I can only pick books from the last 10 years (I got too stressed when I started to think about every book ever published)
No Jenni Holms? I want to add Our Only May Amelia to the list.

That’s a pretty splendid list!

I wonder how many books featuring African Americans or Latinos will make this list?

I can think of a bunch that feature African Americans. Not as many that feature Latinos.

How about Hattie Big Sky by Larson and I.Q. by Roland Smith?

Creating a list of 5 is very challenging:) Hattie is one of my all time favorite books.

Funny! I’ve been mulling this one over for the past 24 hours too! If pressed to do it right now, I’d choose two of the same books as you…The One and Only Ivan and Holes. I’d add Wonder, When You Reach Me and A Year Down Yonder. I agree…it would be much easier to come up with a longer list! Very fun!

Awesome idea! Very difficult to decide. Mine might be: (1) When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, (2) Rules by Cynthia Lord, (3) The Tale of Despereaux by Kate DiCamillo, (4) The Phantom Tollbooth by Norton Juster, and (5) The Giver by Lois Lowry …but choosing 5 feels like choosing a favorite child. Tough work!
